Social Farming Mayo receives Corporate Sponsorship Print

CBE Claremorris have announced their support of Val, a very valuable employee, for his social farming placement. Val, who accesses services from Western Care, has been going to Joe Kelly's farm in Kiltimagh since last year. This placement has, up until now, been supported by Western Care and Social Farming Ireland (SoFI). After the initial sampling placement SoFi cannot support placements long term and Western Care have many demands on their resources. We are all therefore delighted that CBE have fully sponsored Val's placement for the next ten weeks on Joe's farm. This is the first corporate sponsorship of Social farming in the West and is very encouraging for Western Care and social farming in general and its future sustainability.

Val first tried out Social Farm scheme last year because he came from a farming background and always shown an interest in agriculture. Joe Kelly's organic vegetable farm was a great match as Val loves to learn about the variety of vegetables and he enjoys being around the farm animals.  He has a great connection with Joe and feels comfortable to work on the farm, without any support staff.   Social farming has had many benefits for Val such as making new connections in the community, building new friendships, learning new skills and enjoying the countryside!

South West Mayo Development Company are the lead partners in social farming in the west and the development officer for Mayo, Galway and Roscommon is Margaret Leahy who can be contacted at mleahy@southmayo.com 087 623 3862
