South West Mayo Development Company features in Study examining Supports for new Communities Print

South West Mayo Development Company (SWMDC), has welcomed the launch by Minister for Community Development Joe O'Brien TD of a report on the Social Inclusion & Community Activation Programme's (SICAP) role in supporting migrants. SWMDC, incorporating Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA), supports migrants in Mayo through SICAP, the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Programme and the Welcoming & Including New Communities project and is featured in today's report.

SWMDC welcomes the report's recognition of the multiple barriers to social inclusion experienced by new communities and the finding that SICAP and Local Development Companies contribute strongly to migrant integration.

Commenting on the publication the SWMDC CEO, Gerry O'Neill, said; "This is a timely piece of work particularly in the context of the recent Government White Paper on the Ending of Direct Provision. Currently, Social Inclusion budgets are 50% of what they were in 2008 - (€43m currently, €84.7m in 2008).  SICAP, and SWMDC's other migrant focused social inclusion supports such as Refugee Resettlement, need to be resourced on an ongoing basis to meet the ambitions of this report and the Government White Paper. Stop-start funding for these programmes is not a good approach. The explicit recognition of the requirement for additional financial investment to strengthen and support the work of SICAP with migrants is welcome. It is also encouraging that the document acknowledges the good practice approaches of SWMDC's SICAP migrant supports and the alignment of our approach with national and international integration frameworks"
