78 additional Tús Places announced for South and West Mayo Print

Minister Heather Humphreys and Minister of State, Joe O'Brien TD have announced 2,600 additional Tús initiative and Community Employment nationwide. Of this, 78 Tús initiative places have been allocated to South West Mayo Development Company (SWMDC). Paul Gibbons, SWMDC Chairperson, has welcomed the extra places, 'This is a major boost for unemployed people and community voluntary groups in our area. The additional numbers mean that we have increased our Tús work placements by almost 50% to a total of 238 places available to voluntary groups across south and west Mayo.'

SWMDC's Tús initiative placements offer people the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience over a one-year period. In turn, Tús participants provide vital support to local community and voluntary facilities and services, which would be much reduced without schemes such as this.

'The Tús initiative is part of the national Pathways to Work strategy and these places are in response to the higher unemployment levels resulting from the Covid -19 pandemic. We worked really hard to secure these new places for our area and are delighted with the 78 places allocated.' commented Kevin Cunniffe, SWMDC Rural Social Schemes and Tús Initiative Co-ordinator.
