South West Mayo Development Company (SWMDC) has charted an ambitious future in its 2021-2027 Strategic Plan, which was publicly launched on Thursday, 15 April 2021.

A lynchpin of economic, social and community development in Mayo for the last 30 years, SWMDC has set out five high-level goals to guide its work and supports over the next six years.

In 1991, SWMDC was set up as a community-owned LEADER company with the aim of supporting businesses and communities to ‘keep the lights on’ in rural towns and villages across Mayo. SWMDC has grown significantly over the years and now employs over 60 people, with a further 450 people through Community Employment, Rural Social Scheme and Tús.

Commenting on the launch, SWMDC CEO, Gerry O’Neill, said: “It is fitting that we are launching this plan as SWMDC celebrates its 30th anniversary. SWMDC is rooted in the heart of communities across Mayo and our strategy is set out with the growth and development of Mayo at its core.”

SWMDC Chair, Paul Gibbons, added: “SWMDC has already had an incredible impact on so many people’s lives in Mayo. I am confident that this Strategic Plan will allow us to reach our full potential. Today marks a new chapter for SWMDC and Mayo.”
