A Christmas Message from Our CEO
As we embrace the festive spirit and reflect on the achievements of the past year, we are pleased to present the December 2023 edition of the South West Mayo Development Company “In the Loop” Newsletter.
2023 has been a progressive year for SWMDC. We tendered for LEADER 2023-2027, SICAP (Castlebar and Claremorris and Islands), Mayo Resettlement Programme, WorkAbility, and the Asylum Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). Success has already been achieved with the Resettlement and WorkAbility programmes and we await to hear news on the others soon
Our team has expanded to nearly 60 people, bidding farewell to some valued members and warmly welcoming new faces, with more additions anticipated in 2024. The upcoming year promises noteworthy advancements in local enterprise, employment, social inclusion and rural development—highlighted by projects such as the Ballinrobe RRDF. We’ll keep you informed with regular progress updates as they unfold throughout the new year.
As we conclude 2023, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Board and staff members. Their hard work has ensured maximum benefits for our clients and communities, through a strong and resilient integrated local development company. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, prosperous 2024. Kindest regards, Sabina Trench, CEO
The Power of Local Enterprise for Our Community
Through LEADER and SICAP, we have supported many businesses throughout south and west Mayo, and they need your support now more than ever. When we shop local, we’re investing in the growth of our communities. Every sale supports the livelihood of our neighbours and cultivates a supportive atmosphere. So, this Christmas, let’s make it a priority to shop local and recognise how it fosters a thriving and resilient community.
The Importance of Social Inclusion
The spirit of the holidays is all about coming together. Amongst the chaos of the digital environment and the current unrest in the world, Christmas reminds us of how much we need each other. During this festive season, let’s make a special effort to practice social inclusion and extend compassion to those experiencing loneliness, grief, or isolation. Whether through shared events or simple acts of kindness, let’s ensure everyone feels the warmth of this joyful season.
Mayo Resettlement Programme 2024
We’re proud to share that South West Mayo Development Company has won a bid to implement an 18-month Refugee Resettlement Program. Building on our past success with Mayo County Council, this initiative aims to resettle refugees in County Mayo over the coming period.
Mayo Careers Fair - January 2024
Whether you are exploring career options, seeking educational pathways, or looking to enhance your skills, the Mayo Careers Fair is the perfect platform for you. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity to chart your course towards a successful and fulfilling future. We can’t wait to welcome you on

Rural Social Scheme and Tús Initiative
We very much appreciated the opportunity to work with incredible community voluntary organisations throughout 2023, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in the coming year.
As we approach the 20th anniversary of the Rural Social Scheme, we look forward to marking this important milestone, and will share more details in due course. For now, we’d like to wish you happy holidays from the RSS and Tús teams!
Visit from MEP Chris MacManus and Donna Hyland
In November 2023, our Balla office had the pleasure of hosting MEP Chris MacManus and Donna Hyland, organised by our dedicated Board member, Donna Hyland. During the visit, MEP MacManus engaged with SWMDC staff on LEADER, SICAP, and Tús and RSS matters.
Together, we aim to support communities in charting innovative, socially inclusive, environmental, and entrepreneurial paths forward for their development.
SWMDC Team Updates:
In December 2023, we bid farewell to Sinéad O’Malley, LEADER Support & Compliance Officer and Fiona McGreal Finance & Administration in December 2023. Sinéad was a valuable addition to our team and as she moves onto pastures new, we wish her every success. Over the last 23 years, Fiona has been a dedicated and hardworking team member.
