Role Purpose/Description:

To assist the Resettlement Support Worker in supporting the resettlement of Syrian Refugees in County Mayo and their establishment into their local communities. To support the local community and the new arrivals to communicate effectively particularly in the early days post arrival. This is an 18-month employment contract.

Key Responsibility Areas:

Provision of support to newly arrived refugees:

  • Provide immediate support to recently arrived refugees in the local community.
  •  Ensure that newly resettled refugees can move seamlessly into their new homes and respond to any issues that may arise.
  • Co-ordinate day-to-day activities and organise support, to include providing advice, guidance and translation support where necessary.
  • Work in conjunction with the Resettlement Support Worker to support clients into SWMDC’s complementary services, training and capacity building and referring clients to other relevant agencies as necessary.
  • Represent SWMDC on various interagency for a as required.
  • Maintain up-to-date files and records, preparing periodic reports as required.
  • Adhere to guidelines and operational procedures within SWMDC.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

Critical Competencies:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in Arabic and English, both written and spoken. A language test will form part of the interview process.
  • Understanding of cultural norms, demonstrate an insight and awareness into the complex issues affecting new communities.
  • Good understanding of the skills needed to work with interpreters.
  • An understanding of the local development sector, local authorities, HSE, MSLETB, Tusla and other local agencies and service providers, government departments and employers would be an advantage.
  • An understanding and knowledge of the rights and entitlements of Persons dependent on State support are essential.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people from various backgrounds in a variety of social settings in a respectful and empowering way.
  • Full commitment to confidentiality.
  • Proficient in English.
  • Children First training.

Desirable Competencies/Qualifications:

  • Relevant 3rd level qualification.
  • Report writing skills.
  • Proficient in IT

Terms & Conditions of Employment:

  1. Salary: The salary for this full-time position is €41,768 per annum.
  2. Duration of Contract: The contract is for a full-time position for a fixed term period of 18 months
    subject to probation and satisfactory performance.
  3. Probation: Probation period of six months will apply.
  4. Working Hours: 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday (35 hrs per week).
  5. Annual Leave: Annual leave will be 25 days per annum.
  6. Travel & Subsistence: Travel and subsistence will be paid at public sector rates.
  7. Location of the position: The post holder will be based in South West Mayo Development Company’s Castlebar office.
  8. Driving Licence: A full driving licence and access to own transport is essential.
  9. Garda Vetting: Garda vetting is required.
