We're Hiring: Resettlement Support Worker

Role Purpose/Description:

To support the re-settlement of Syrian Refugees in Mayo. This includes their establishment into their local communities, and to assist them with access to services that may be necessary for health, education, or other purposes. This is an 18-month employment contract.

Reporting To:

Programme Manager / Coordinator

Key Responsibility Areas:

Provision of support to newly arrived refugees:

  • Providing immediate support to recently arrived refugees in the local community.
  • Ensure that newly resettled refugees can move seamlessly into their new homes and responding to any issues that may arise. 
  • Ensuring each family receives the information with regard to the running of their new home and monitoring progress. 
  • Establish linkages with service providers ensuring the refugees are in receipt of their rights and entitlement, such as Department of Social Protection etc. 
  • Making appropriate provision for persons with special needs, including working with mainstream service providers to assist in accessing appropriate services outside of the area. 


To support representation, integration & participation:

  • To use the community development principles and approach (empowerment, participation, equality, social justice, collective action, self-help and strengths-based approach) 
  • Identify services available locally and make the necessary introductions and linkages. 
  • Support Mainstream service providers in their efforts to identify and provide support services such as childcare, educational, dental, optical services, medical appointments, linkages to sporting and other local activities.
  • Liaising with Mayo Sligo Leitrim ETB(MSLETB) with regard to English Language learning provision.
  • Identify in consultation with refugees any training programme needs to prepare them for entry into the labour market and to Liaise with mainstream service providers to encourage participation in such programmes.


 Recording and Reporting:

  • To record observations, information and issues arising thoroughly and accurately (in line with Data Protection policies), to inform needs-based responses, services, and strategic actions. 
  • Monitoring, recording, and evaluating the quality of the service delivered to refugees on a continuous basis. Developing findings into periodic performance reports for dissemination. South West Mayo Development Company CLG 
  • To attend support and supervision sessions with Programme Coordinator/Manager and to prepare the following in advance: a) Monthly time sheets b) Report summarising key tasks completed. 
  • Provide quarterly financial progress reports to the InterAgency Working Group / Mayo County council in a prescribed format, and a financial report on completion of programme.


 Training and Networking: 

  • To participate in training relevant to the post as agreed with the Supervisor.
  • To attend quarterly meetings of Inter-Agency Working Group. 
  • To attend other meetings when requested. 
  • Represent SWMDC on various interagency fora as required. Any other duties as may be deemed appropriate

Critical Competencies:

  • Understanding of cultural norms, demonstrate an insight and
    awareness into the complex issues affecting new communities.
  • Good understanding of the skills needed to work using interpreters.
  • An understanding of the local development sector, local authorities, HSE, MSLETB and other local agencies and service providers, government departments and employers would be an advantage.
  • An understanding and knowledge of the rights and entitlements of persons dependent on State supports is essential.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people from various backgrounds in a variety of social settings in a respectful and empowering way.
  • Full commitment to confidentiality.
  • Full clean driving license.
  • Access to own transport as travel will be required as part of thisrole.

Desirable Competencies/Qualifications:

  • Relevant 3rd level qualification.
  • Report writing skills.
  • Proficient in IT.
  • Fluent English and Arabic language skills would be a distinct

Terms & Conditions of Employment:

  1. Salary: The salary for this full-time position is €53,817 per annum.
  2. Duration of Contract: The contract is for a full-time position for a fixed term period of 18
    months subject to probation and satisfactory performance.
  3. Probation: Probation period of six months will apply.
  4. Working Hours: 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday (35 hrs per week).
  5. Annual Leave: Annual leave will be 25 days per annum.
  6. Travel & Subsistence: Travel and subsistence will be paid at public sector rates.
  7. Location of the position: The post holder will be primarily based in South West Mayo Development Company Castlebar office.
  8. Driving Licence: A full driving licence and access to own transport is essential.
  9. Garda Vetting: Garda vetting is required.
